He was elected Chair of the 3-day Forum and was also a panellist on a High-Level Panel on “Regular Pathways for Migration”, underscoring the importance of safe and structured migration opportunities within the region.
This forum brought together counterparts and key stakeholders from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss migration challenges, best practices, and emerging issues, ensuring that migration remains safe, orderly, and beneficial for all.
In his capacity as Chair, Hon. Naupoto was invited by the UNESCAP Secretariat to present the summary report of the “Second Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration”.
Hon. Naupoto reported that delegations reaffirmed their commitment to the Global Compact’s principles and objectives, as well as the need for bilateral and regional cooperation to safeguard migrants’ rights and ensure their positive contributions to development in Asia and the Pacific.
Hon. Naupoto further reported that the Forum generated two decisions, calling upon the ESCAP Secretariat and other members of the Regional United Nations Network on Migration for Asia and the Pacific to:
i) continue to support members and associate members of the Commission in the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; and
ii) continue to support members and associate members of the Commission in building capacity and reporting on the implementation of migration-related Sustainable Development Goals at the regional and global levels.
Minister Naupoto is supported at the meeting by Ms. Rasieli Rabukawaqa, Manager of Policy and Planning.
