16/09/2025

The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the four-year-old child who tragically lost her life after an accident at a school in Lautoka on Friday evening, 13 September 2025.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the child during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to the school community and everyone affected by this tragedy. Losing a young life is devastating, and the pain of such a loss is felt by us all,” Minister Radrodro said.

The Ministry of Education takes this incident very seriously. Ensuring the safety of every child in school is our top priority. This tragic accident highlights the need for constant vigilance and care within school environments.

As part of the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to child safety, schools are guided by the Ministry’s Occupational Health and Safety standards. These standards ensure that school facilities are safe, students are properly supervised, and any hazards or risks are reported immediately.

“With Term 3 now underway, it is even more important that schools, teachers, and parents work together to make sure all children are safe while at school. Every school must provide an environment where children can learn, play, and grow without fear of injury. This includes paying close attention to school infrastructure, supervising children, and promoting a culture of safety in every classroom and playground,” Hon. Radrodro added.

He calls on all schools across Fiji to take proactive measures to protect students. Schools should carry out regular safety checks and make sure that emergency procedures are clearly understood and practiced by both staff and students. Teachers, school leaders, and parents share the responsibility to maintain a safe learning environment and prevent accidents before they happen.

“This tragedy is a solemn reminder that the care and safety of our children cannot be taken for granted. Every child has the right to a safe and secure place to learn, and it is our collective responsibility to uphold this right. The Ministry of Education remains committed to working with school communities to strengthen child safety and prevent such incidents in the future.”

The Ministry assures the public that child safety remains at the heart of all educational activities. We will continue to monitor school environments, provide guidance to school leaders, and support teachers and parents in creating safe and protective spaces for children to grow, learn, and thrive.
