The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Hon. Filimoni Vosarogo, today visited Ratu Finau Memorial School on the island of Lakeba in the Lau Group where he addressed students on the importance of ambition, perseverance, and educational commitment despite geographic limitations.
In his address, Minister Vosarogo said that students should not allow their maritime island locality to define or restrict their potential. He urged the students to remain focused on their goals and to understand that their calling in life extends far beyond the shores of their home island.
“You are not limited by the land you come from. Your dreams and aspirations are bigger than this island. Stay focused, work hard, and believe that your future holds great promise,” the Minister stated.
Minister Vosarogo reminded the students of Lakeba’s rich legacy of leadership, highlighting the notable example of Fiji’s first Prime Minister, former President, and the late Turaga na Tui Nayau, who also hailed from the island. He emphasized that this heritage is a source of inspiration and a testament to the leadership potential that resides within each student.
While speaking, the Minister made reference to the success story of the current Director of Mineral Resources, Dr. Apete Soro. Dr. Soro, originally from Cikobia Island, began his education at Cikobia Village School, continued through Ratu Kadavulevu School, and pursued higher education at the University of Auckland and the University of Queensland. He later earned his Doctorate in Philosophy from Hokkaido University in Japan.
Both Minister Vosarogo and Dr. Soro spoke passionately to the students about the value of discipline, hard work, and unwavering dedication in the pursuit of education. They encouraged the students to be obedient and respectful while maintaining clear focus on their academic goals.
The visit also provided an opportunity for the Minister and Dr. Soro to engage with teachers at Ratu Finau Memorial School. They listened to stories and challenges faced by educators working in rural and remote maritime schools, acknowledging their commitment and the crucial role they play in shaping the future of young Fijians.
Minister Vosarogo’s visit aimed to not only motivate and uplift students, but also to reaffirm the government’s commitment to inclusive development and support for education across all regions, including remote island communities.
