Pink ribbons, bright smiles, and heartfelt purpose filled the Ministry of Information office in Suva today (31/10/2025), as staff gathered for a Pinktober breakfast to stand united in the fight against breast cancer.
Minister for Information Hon. Lynda Tabuya reiterated that breast cancer is real, painful, and affects everyone.
“Many of us have lost someone or know someone who is battling breast cancer- a sister, a mother, a grandmother, or a dear friend, and we understand the depth of that pain. We have seen their suffering, heard their pleas, and felt their silent strength. In those moments, all we could do was sit beside them and offer a shoulder to lean on. Their cries still echo in our hearts, serving as a solemn reminder that this fight must never be ignored,” Hon. Tabuya stated.
Emphasising the importance of a well-informed society, Minister Tabuya reaffirmed the Ministry of Information’s commitment to continue discussions with the Fiji Cancer Society and survivors, striving to share their stories and raise greater awareness among Fijians.
“A well-informed society builds a safe, strong, and healthy Fiji. By sharing information and creating awareness, we can empower our hardworking, multitasking women to recognise warning signs early."
Fiji Cancer Society Chief Executive Officer Belinda Chan emphasised the importance of sustaining the dialogue on breast cancer awareness beyond Pinktober, urging everyone to continue these conversations throughout the year and beyond.
Bringing a personal perspective to the event, breast cancer survivor Farnia Simion Lord shared her journey, describing it as both painful and transformative.
The mother of four credited the steadfast support of her husband, children, and the Fiji Cancer Society for shaping her into a resilient woman, one who now proudly earns and provides for her family.
Staff members from the Ministry of Information and the National Archives of Fiji also generously donated to the cause, with a total of $1,000 handed over to the Fiji Cancer Society during the celebrations.
