MINISTRY ORGANISES CAREERS WORKSHOP AND EXPO IN NADI

04/07/2012

Twelve teachers from secondary schools in Nadi are undergoing a day-long workshop on careers education at Nadi College today.

The workshop, organised by the Careers Section of the Ministry of Education, is to critically vet the Forms 5, 6 and 7 careers education prescription for Fiji.

Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal said a handbook related to careers education for teachers and students is being reviewed by the Curriculum Development Unit.

He said today’s workshop is to enlighten the teachers about how to better inform their students on career opportunities available in Fiji.

The Public Service Commission and the University of Fiji will also make presentations to the participants informing them about the various career opportunities available for our students.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has also organised a Careers Expo for Nadi students tomorrow at the Nadi College.

Dr Lal said a careers expo of this nature would help bring awareness on the type of employment opportunities on hand in the country.

“This is also to inform the teachers and students to work on the right subject combination at school so that the students can make informed choices for their career path,” Dr Lal said.

“We are also emphasising to teachers and students to keep in mind Fiji’s human resources needs. There are certain employment opportunities in Fiji that lack adequate human resources such as doctors, weather forecasters, engineers, surveyors, marine biologist, and town and country planners.”

The eleven Nadi secondary schools scheduled to participate in the day-long careers expo will interact with organisations from a range of different industries.
