Seven volunteers under the Fiji Volunteer Scheme (FVS) today signed their letters of appointments and also took their Oath of Affirmation at the Public Service Commission in Berkeley Crescent to begin their six weeks work attachment with the Elections Office.
While briefing the volunteers, the Public Service Commission permanent secretary Mr Parmesh Chand said that the experience and exposure gained from this assignment will be remarkable and mutually beneficial both to the Government and the Volunteers. They will be able to get an experience of a lifetime, especially when the Elections Office is undertaking a major exercise involving electronic voter registration.
"Doing voluntary service is a duty to the nation and your six weeks at the Elections Office will provide opportunities for you to develop your skills that will prepare you for permanent employment. It will also provide you opportunities to demonstrate virtues of civic pride, patriotism and commitment to national service”, Mr Chand said.
He added that the Elections Office will be organising an orientation program for the volunteers and will be informed on their roles and responsibilities.
The volunteers will be paid a weekly allowance of $100 per individual.
After signing their documents with the PSC, the volunteers were received by the Ministry of Justice acting permanent secretary Mrs. Mereseini Vuniwaqa at the Elections Office in Toorak.
Since the launch of the FVS in May this year, there have been 18 volunteers who have been successfully engaged for attachment in various Ministries and Departments.
The PSC is also working on finding opportunities for retirees to be engaged as Senior Volunteers, serving in areas of national and regional interest in various Pacific Island Countries.
