09/09/2025

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today (9.09.25) between the Yavusa Wainikeli of Naselesele Village in Taveuni and the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, marking a significant step towards agricultural development in the area.

The MOU focuses on the development of 1,182 acres of Trust Land in Naselesele Village, primarily for agricultural purposes.

In his remarks, the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna, thanked the Yavusa Wainikeli for their vision and commitment, noting that the partnership should be an eye-opener for other landowning units across Fiji. He said the initiative demonstrates how communities can work with Government to put idle land to productive use, creating opportunities for food security, income generation, and sustainable livelihoods.

Representatives of the Yavusa Wainikeli expressed their commitment to the initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance food production, create jobs, and expand economic opportunities for the people of Naselesele and the wider Taveuni community.

Advisor to the Wainikeli Trustees, Suliano Ramanu, commended the Ministry for its technical support and dedication, describing the signing as a milestone that will bring lasting benefits for future generations. He added that the project reflects a shared commitment to work under a cooperative solesolevaki model that will ensure economic returns for landowning units.

Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways, Dr. Andrew Tukana, said the MOU formalises a partnership rooted in sustainable development, improving land access and tenure security to boost productivity and food security for Fiji.

Minister for Policing, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, who was also present, stressed that agriculture must be embraced as a pillar of community progress, saying the bold decision of the Yavusa Wainikeli will inspire other landowning units across Fiji.
The Ministry will now work with the Yavusa Wainikeli to develop a “best use” plan for the land, incorporating modern agricultural practices and sustainable methods to maximise productivity and economic opportunities.
