In a landmark event, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fijian Elections Office today (24.07.25) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that strengthens collaboration to support overseas voter registration and electoral awareness efforts.
The updated MoU provides a clear framework that enables Fiji’s Diplomatic Missions to deliver key voter services on behalf of the FEO. This includes facilitating voter registration, disseminating election information, and supporting FEO staff posted internationally.
With over 200,000 Fijians living abroad, this partnership is a critical step in ensuring they are not left behind in the democratic process, particularly as Fiji prepares for the next General Election.
The Supervisor of Elections, Ms. Ana Mataiciwa, described the signing as a milestone in expanding voter access and inclusivity.
“This MoU is more than just a document. It’s a commitment to every Fijian living overseas. It ensures that no matter where our citizens reside, they have the opportunity to register, stay informed, and vote in national elections,” said Ms. Mataiciwa.
The MoU outlines specific roles and responsibilities in areas such as training, logistical coordination, and real-time communication between the FEO and MFA. It also provides for pre-election briefings and rapid response mechanisms to ensure seamless delivery of voter services overseas.
This renewed partnership reflects the FEO’s ongoing commitment to delivering transparent, accessible, and trusted elections through a whole-of-government approach.
“Our goal is simple. Every Fijian voice matters. Through this agreement, we are removing barriers and building a more inclusive democracy for all,” Ms. Mataiciwa added.
In welcoming the renewed collaboration, the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr Raijeli Taga said the MoU will ensure that the Fijian Diaspora have access to voter registration services and are able to fully participate in the next General Election.
PS Taga reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working collaboratively with FEO in delivering inclusive, timely, and efficient voter services to Fijians living abroad, stating that Fiji’s Diplomatic Missions stand ready to provide support for the successful implementation of the MoU.
PS Taga acknowledged the FEO’s continued commitment to strengthening this crucial partnership aimed at building an inclusive democracy for all Fijians across the globe.
The MoU builds on a history of cooperation between the two organisations and reinforces ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral access for diaspora communities across the Pacific and beyond.
