MUTUAL EFFORT PAVES THE WAY FOR SUSTAINABLE OCEAN MANAGEMENT

11/09/2023

NADI, 11/09/23 – A recent oceanic mission, only the second of its kind in over a century, has unveiled valuable scientific insights poised to reshape our understanding of coral reefs and marine ecosystems. This extensive research was executed in partnership with the WAITT Institute through Blue Prosperity Fiji and stands as one of the most comprehensive assessments of our underwater ecosystems to date.

This expedition brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and local communities, all uniting in pursuit of a common objective. This collaborative approach underscores the pivotal role of partnerships in achieving successful outcomes.

Spanning three distinct phases, an intrepid team of explorers journeyed across Fiji's expansive maritime terrain, ranging from the western expanse of Viti Levu to the eastern reaches of the Lau group, encompassing the Lomaiviti Islands, Cakaudrove, and Macuata’s Udu Point.

Despite the challenging weather conditions encountered during the initial and concluding phases, the team remained resolute, meticulously exploring 272 dive sites and gathering invaluable scientific data. This data, encompassing assessments of coral reef health, fish populations, invertebrates, and water quality, serves as the cornerstone for Fiji's baseline knowledge of its marine ecosystems.

The Government of Fiji worked closely with partner agencies, including the University of the South Pacific (USP), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Conservation International (CI), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the Pacific Blue Foundation (PBF), Uto Ni Yalo (UNY), Scripps Institution of Oceanography, WAITT Foundation, to lead a groundbreaking effort. This initiative showcases Fiji's unwavering dedication to understanding, preserving, and sustainably managing its marine resources.

Ms. Neomai Ravitu, Director of Fisheries, provided insights into the Blue Prosperity Fiji program, explaining that its primary objective is a thorough exploration of Fiji's marine life and resources while fostering a shared understanding among the people of Fiji regarding the state of their oceans.

“This undertaking encompassed not only water quality assessments but also surveys of coral reefs, contributing to the development of a marine spatial plan for Fiji's waters. The wealth of information amassed will empower evidence-based decision-making concerning resource conservation and sustainable practices,” stated the Director.

“The teams, composed of divers and researchers, meticulously documented coral reef health, fish populations, invertebrates, and water quality. Through standardized methods, they tallied fish, identified species, captured images of coral reefs, and evaluated water quality parameters, including sewage and nutrient content.”

She went on to highlight that the compiled data, while not intended for specific stock assessments, will provide a crucial foundation for supporting traditional knowledge and ongoing monitoring efforts in Fiji.

“The data amassed during this ambitious mission will play a pivotal role in enhancing Fiji's marine spatial planning, aligning with the nation's National Ocean Policy.”

This updated information, the Director noted, will equip decision-makers to craft effective strategies for ocean conservation, food security, community livelihoods, and responsible resource management.

“In doing so, we will also extend our outreach to our maritime communities, providing them with updated information on the status of their reefs and resources, thereby fostering informed decision-making,” added Ms. Ravitu.

Dr. Joeli Veitayaki,  the Co-Science Primary Investigator for the WAITT Foundation, emphasized that this mission forms part of a broader initiative to gain deeper insights into and safeguard coral reefs across the Pacific region. He underscored that similar efforts have been undertaken in other Pacific Island nations, underscoring the significance of establishing a shared knowledge repository accessible to governments, local communities, and non-governmental organizations alike.

“Even as we continue to analyze the data, it is evident that this mission represents a pivotal stride toward realizing sustainable ocean management in Fiji. The findings of this study will unveil the present condition of Fiji's coral reefs, the challenges they confront, and the requisite measures for their protection,” stated Dr. Veitayaki.

Furthermore, Dr. Veitayaki highlighted the importance of deploying 88 temperature loggers over the next five years, as this will yield invaluable insights into temperature trends and their impacts.

As the nation eagerly anticipates the comprehensive analysis of the amassed data, this mission stands as a testament to Fiji's unwavering commitment to preserving its natural treasures. It signifies a significant milestone on the journey toward well-informed ocean management, environmentally responsible practices, and the safeguarding of Fiji's marine biodiversity for generations to come.

In the words of Director Ravitu, "We are all united in our shared concerns about ensuring that coral ecosystems remain in a healthy, productive state for our present generation and those yet to come."

"The forthcoming all-encompassing report is poised to unveil a comprehensive exposition of Fiji's vast marine resources, thereby shedding light on the profound implications these resources hold for the imperatives of sustainable marine conservation."
