Two airports remain closed in the northern and eastern division.
Matei Airport on the island of Taveuni and the airport in Vanuabalavu in the Lau group are yet to open. These are the only two airports confirmed to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) in Suva to be closed.
Information from NDMO reveals all other airports and airstrips around the country are open. However, Director Civil Aviation Mr Akuila Waradi notes that the airstrips on Gau, Koro and Lakeba are still closed.
“We were given figures by Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) that only four airports are open,” Mr Waradi said.
The airports include Nadi, Labasa, Nausori, and Rotuma. He confirmed damages to the airports infrastructure, but said it was minimal.
“We have only been told that fences and louvers and small damages were sustained to the terminals, but AFL currently has a team looking at the runways to see if it has been damaged before they open all airports.”
