Fiji has been encouraged to tap and venture deeper into tourism and fisheries sectors to help grow its economy.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola during his recent visit in Indonesia was told to maximise resources in these two areas.

Ratu Inoke visited the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat.

He called on the Secretary-General of ASEAN Dr Surin.

They exchanged views on recent developments in both ASEAN and Fiji.

Dr Surin encouraged Ratu Inoke to explore the potential of investment cooperation with ASEAN, such as in the fields of fisheries and tourism.

ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8th August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.

Its aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, the protection of peace and stability in the region, and to provide opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.

ASEAN spans over an area of 4.46 million with a population of approximately 580 million people, 8.7 per cent of the world population.

In 2009, its combined nominal GDP had grown to more than USD $1.5 trillion.
