Minister clarifies primary school fees

The Education Minister, Mr Filipe Bole clarified that all primary school children were supposed to pay only $10 as school fees.

Any amount beyond that has to be approved first by the Ministry of Education permanent secretary.

“The policy governing the payment of fees in primary school states that, each child pays only $10. Should a school charge more than that, the school has to first obtain approval of the permanent secretary for Education,” Mr Bole said.

He made the comment after a number of complaints from the public regarding primary school managements turning back children for not paying school fees.

“Over the years, Government has been paying $30 per child. This assistance will be reviewed soon but if schools continue to charge fees, the Fijian Government will have to stop paying them fee free grants,” Mr Bole added.
