Minister launches Damodar City

07/04/2011

The $30million Damodar City project was launched last night by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Anti Corruption, Public Enterprises, Communications and Civil Aviation, Tourism, Industry and Trade Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Clearing works at Damodar City site is already underway along Grantham Road.

Upon completion of the construction works the city will have four screen cinemas, supermarkets, department stores and international food court, 23 variety shops, professional offices, restaurants, a medical centre, a kids play centre and a large car park.

More than 700 new jobs will be created when the project is complete.

The project has become a reality after the formation of the London Guarantee Corporation Limited, which is a joint venture partnership between very close friends in Dayanand Damodar and Alistair Hutchison.

Damodar Brothers chief executive Div Damodar said that Hutchison was an active investor in several Pacific Island countries. He is a long-term investor in Fiji with his local companies employing more than 120 staff.

“Hutchison has often talked about his strong belief in Fiji and its future and he demonstrated this with his involvement in the city project,” Mr Damodar said.

He also thanked the Fiji Government for its ongoing support for the private sector and the strong vision for building a better Fiji.

Damodar started off the cinema business back in 1962 in Fiji after their textile import and export business moved to Suva from Rakiraki in 1950.

Through his vision, leadership and strategic thinking, Damodar has taken the company from a small Rakiraki based shop to a significant commercial enterprise in Fiji.
