It is uncommon to have a media unit in Fiji’s secondary school yet it is surprising to see one in one of the remotest secondary schools in Fiji.
The Education Minister Mr Filipe Bole learnt about the media unit while in Cicia High School to officially launch Form 7 early this month.
The media unit is made up of two teachers and students who make video coverage of the week’s happenings.
In the weekend, the school watches the production made by the media team.
According to the Principal, Mr Isikeli Karikaritu, the video camera is especially bought for this reason.
“I commend their effort and creativity to have such a team to make things interesting in school,” Mr Filipe Bole said.
“ The students are also taught to appreciate educational programmes rather than having sole preference of movies,” added Mr Bole.
The media unit of the school is gaining popularity in Cicia Island and is sometimes asked to cover important functions in the island.
Through the media team, committee members in Suva and overseas are also able to be updated with school functions through the video mode.
The school is also able to make a collection of video reference materials.
The Minister for Education is urging remote schools to create similar initiatives to make education realistic and fun.
