Ministry of Education alerting schools over Cyclone

11/03/2010

The Minister for Education Mr Filipe Bole is calling on all principals and head teachers of all schools in Fiji to supervise immediate return home of school children and secure school premises upon receiving this message and announcements over the air.

The ministry issues the alert over a cyclone warning that the DISMAC Office says will be upon Fiji in the next few hours. Teachers are to make necessary arrangements with parents and bus companies for immediate pick up of children from schools in town and urban areas.

While going to schools to pick children, the Minister advises parents and guardians to remain calm and collected to avoid chaos and obstructions to teachers who will be supervising school dismissal. For schools in the rural and outer islands, teachers are similarly advised to see that children are briefed of the approaching cyclone and warned to go straight home and not linger on the way.

Parents are requested to collect their children from schools which is the safer option. School committees are also asked to assist teachers in securing school buildings and quarters as safety measures.

Should parents and guardians seek further clarifications, they are to ask their principals and head teachers who will direct queries to their local district education offices.

Schools will remain closed until further notice from the Ministry of Education.
