Ministry of Education furthers its education assistance

15/01/2010

The Ministry of Education intends to assist parents, who are finding difficulty in sending their children to schools, both at the primary and secondary level this year.

Assistance would be in the form of textbooks and arrangement for payment of school levies with schools.

Those parents who fall into this category are requested to report to their nearest Education District Office and submit their names for consideration.

This benevolent gesture is in response to Mrs Sharda Mani’s desperate situation, which was highlighted by a daily newspaper on Friday (15/01).

The Ministry of Education is aware of similar cases around the country and is coming forth to lend assistance to those in need.

However, the Ministry is also aware that some will take advantage of this exercise, the Ministry will ensure that systems are in place to avoid fraudulent practices.

That is why parents are urged to report only to their nearest Education Offices around the country. The Education Officers in the districts will assess applicants and respond appropriately.

This exercise is in line with the new reform of the Ministry of Education which is that all children are to receive at least 12 years of basic education.

The Ministry is therefore prepared to ensure that this policy is successfully implemented.

To date, the Ministry is providing transport assistance, free tuition and free textbooks.
