Ministry of Education to decide on Lautoka school

03/11/2009

The Education Ministry is indeed saddened by the news of the fire that broke out during the wee hours of this morning at Lautoka Muslim Primary School.

At the moment, the Ministry is awaiting report from the Director of Primary Education Dr Brij Lal, before making decisions on the rebuilding of the school.

The Ministry has identified funds leftover from some capital vote allocations of this year.

Decisions will be made after Dr Lal visited the site and submit his report to both the Permanent Secretary and Minister of Education.

The fire, which started at 1:20am early this morning destroyed 14 classrooms, a toilet block, a storeroom and the kindergarten classroom.

A major part of the building was wooden, which made the fire to travel very quickly.

The school has a roll of 591 children, including the kindergarten and 16 teachers.

The fire affected 385 children including the kindergarten school, who are now staying home, until further notice from the management.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire.
