21/09/2009

The Ministry of Education today (22/09/09) released the results of the 2009 Fiji Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (FILNA). Primary schools that presented students for the test in June can collect their results from their District Education offices or expect to receive their results through the mail in the next few days.

A total of 22,555 students of classes 4, 6 and 8 appeared for the test in Literacy and Numeracy at 437 schools throughout the nation this year. Of the total that sat, there were 10,001 class four students; 10,114 class six students and 2,440 class eight students.

The total number of students who took the FILNA this year is slightly less than those who sat last year. In 2008 a total of 25,205 students appeared for the test and of the total that sat, there were 11,603 class four students; 11,057 class six students and 3,085 class eight students.

The test which is outcomes-based is derived from the current local prescriptions in Literacy and Numeracy at the classes 4, 6 and 8 levels. The results are not given as marks as in the FIE and FEYE, rather the achievement of a child is shown on an Individual Student Report as a location on a progressive scale of educational outcomes.
