Ministry satisfied with pass rate

The Ministry of Education is satisfied with the 2010 Fiji Seventh Form Examination pass rate.

The Form Seven results were released on January 4.

Education permanent secretary, Dr Brij Lal said even though the pass rate for 2010 was a little less than 2009, the pass rate of more than 75 per cent last year was quite satisfactory.

“In 2010, 4744 students appeared for the Form Seven exams in 105 schools. Of this number 3589 students passed, which is 75.7 per cent and we are quite satisfied with this,” Dr Lal said.

“When we compare these results with that of 2009, the overall pass rate is 76.8 per cent. A total of 4460 students appeared for FSFE in 98 schools in 2009 and 3425 had passed. Out of these 3425 students, 8.1 per cent or 363 students passed with more than 300.”

He also said that national standard procedures and processes were followed during the processing of these results.

Dr Lal’s comments came after some parents and students complained of good marks in other subjects and failure in English.

The permanent secretary said national results could not be compared with an individual’s school examination marks.

“We cannot compare national results with individual school marks. According to us, the results obtained are what each candidate genuinely obtained in the national examination,” Dr Lal said.

“National standard procedures and processes are followed during the processing of national results. Students who are not satisfied with their marks are welcome to have it rechecked or recounted.”

Meanwhile, Dr Lal said students who sat for Form Four and Six examinations last year, can expect their results by next week.

“We expect the Fiji Junior results to be out early next week and the Form Six results to be out late next week,” he said.
