More plans for Savusavu

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama says Savusavu has the potential to contribute towards the economy in as far nation building is concerned.

He said, given the important role Savusavu plays in Fiji’s economy, it is only good that more development is done to boost economic activities in the copra town.

“ Government is committed to assisting the top end of the tourism market. Savusavu is a must destination for the super yachts.

“ The opening of this new Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA) is part of this commitments - to de-centralizing FIRCA’s core activities into potential port of entries around Fiji.

“ These developments also complement the declaration of Vanua Levu as part of the tax free region and Savusavu will be at the forefront of Government’s development strategy,” he said.

He said given the potential from the various initiatives and trends, FIRCA would extend the Tourist VAT Refund Scheme to Savusavu from January 1, 2011.

The scheme allows tourists who spend FJD$500 or more while in Fiji to claim a tax refund upon departure.

He assured the people of the hidden paradise that bigger plans are in the pipeline the fast growing town.

However, Commodore Bainimarama emphasized the need for collectiveness towards a common goal.

“We the citizens, agencies, tourism operators, hoteliers, food suppliers and services, business houses, business men and women, professionals, trade unions, employers and employees all have to collaborate.

“ We need build institutions and systems that are transparent, efficient and has built-in sustainability,”he said.

He commended the tourism sector in Savusavu, which is in partnership with Government in developing the Savusavu airport.

The hidden paradise originally established as a trading center for sandalwood, beche-de-mer and copra and is famous for its hot springs.
