Yaqona farmers in the villages of Naivucini, Naitauvoli, and Nuku in the District of Nadaravakawalu, in Naitasiri, expressed their gratitude to the Government following the handover of their Yaqona Pounding Machine, valued at $17,400.00, under the Commercial Farming and Agri–Business initiative.

The three villages have united to eradicate poverty, improve livelihoods, and reduce hardship through community-based farming.

Each village contributed one-third of the cost, amounting to $1,933.35, while the government covered the remaining two-thirds, totaling $3,866.65 for each pounding machine.

In 2019, the leaders of the three villages adopted the rural millionaire concept, a successful strategy often utilised in rural and maritime communities. This innovative approach focuses on integrated farming and strategic business planning.

As a result of their efforts, last year they celebrated a remarkable production achievement with 64 tonnes of green produce, approximately valued at $960,000.00, and 21 tonnes of dalo valued at $63,000.00.

After their harvest last year, they bought a five-tonne truck to assist them in transporting their produce to the market, they opened an investment account and are aiming for higher education for their children.

The Assistant Minister for Finance and Strategic Planning, Hon. Esrom Immanuel, while handing over the pounding machines at Naivucini, last week, presented the support with a focus on fostering growth in the kava industry and enhancing its export opportunities, reflecting the government’s dedication to this vital sector.

“I would like to acknowledge and commend you for championing this important initiative, as it lays a solid foundation for positive change and progress,” said Hon. Immanuel.

“I encourage you to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways. By working together, you can accomplish significant goals for your family and contribute positively to Fiji as a whole.

Mr. Esira Naikatolu, representing the Tikina Nadaravakawalu, confidently expressed his gratitude to the government of the day for making their long-held dream a reality.

“This milestone not only instils a sense of pride in us but also motivates us to further cultivate growth and seek additional business opportunities,” said Mr Naikatolu.

“To the youth, if you find yourself without employment and have access to land, consider utilising it to its full potential. The resources you need are at your disposal; all it takes is your initiative and effort to make it happen,” said Mr Naikatolu.

A talanoa session was also held where villages inquired about ways to further improve their land and production.

Assistant Minister Immanuel encouraged everyone to make use of the services offered by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, as they play a vital role in enhancing the profitability of agricultural ventures.

Additionally, make sure to keep your communication organised and strategic to achieve your goals effectively.
