A paramount chief has called for measures to be put in place to ensure the sustainability of Fiji’s natural resources.

Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua whose province is abundant with hectares of untouched forest including mahogany says sustainable development for the future generation is important.

He pointed out the Peoples Charter for Change Peace and Progress – Pillar 5 which advocates for achieving higher economic growth while ensuring sustainability and also highlighted the newly launched National Climate Change Policy.

“We become so greedy that we want everything good for ourselves, yet the reality should be that we must strive to have sustainable development for the benefit of our future generation,” he said.

“The focus should now be on our children and grandchildren who will inherit all we have now – this means they too need to be in the picture when we are dealing with developmental issues pertaining to our natural resources.”
