The Ministry of Education's objective of repealing automatic progression from the education system is to ensure that students achieve the learning outcomes and competencies of a particular level before advancing to the next academic level.
This was stressed by the Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro at the National Consultation on Repealing of Automatic Progressions in Schools at the Suva Grammar High School today. (16.01.25)
Minister Radrodro said these consultations mark the beginning of an inclusive and participatory process.
“We are here to listen, to share ideas, and to collaborate. We value the insights and contributions of all stakeholders—educators, students, parents, teachers and community members. This is an opportunity to raise your ideas on critical matters such as this automatic progression.”
“Your voices are critical, as this initiative is not just an administrative exercise but is a transformative process that will shape the future of education and development in Fiji.”
The minister highlighted that these consultations also aim to develop a system that enhances the quality and standards of progression of our students.
“By benchmarking against international best practices and integrating feedback from stakeholders, we can create a system that is both world-class and tailored to our unique context.”
Minister Radrodro also noted several challenges due to automatic progressions, where it has created a culture of complacency amongst students, teachers and parents and instances of learning gaps due to underprepared students who have not mastered the foundational knowledge and skills of their current grade who are promoted to the next grade.
Participants were acknowledged for their contributions to this national consultation and helping build a brighter and a more prosperous future for all Fijians.
“I urge all of us to approach these consultations with an open mind and a collaborative spirit. Let us be bold in our vision, innovative in our solutions, and committed to creating a brighter future for all Fijians.”
