This week the Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) received a new 10-ton crane truck from the New Zealand Government through its High Commission in Suva.
The New Zealand High Commission’s First Secretary Development, Mr Brendan Sherry, officiated at the handover ceremony and said that the relationship between NZAID programme and the NDMO is a key partnership for New Zealand Government.
He said the handover of the truck is part of a project that also includes the supply of water tanks for emergencies, a mobile warehouse logistics unit, and capacity work for personnel that work for the NDMO.
In receiving the truck on behalf of the Fijian Government, Director Disaster Management, Mr Akapusi Tuifagalele conveyed his appreciation to the New Zealand Government and reflected on its continued assistance to the people of Fiji.
He said, “The New Zealand Government has a direct bilateral relationship with the Ministry through the NDMO since Tropical Cyclone Evan in 2012 and has been a pillar of strength in engaging with disaster risk reduction and emergency assistance to Fiji.”
“The truck will be used to cart materials and machines that will be needed at various project sites around Fiji.”
Mr Tuifagalele added that the truck, which is furbished to assist the NDMO with emergency logistical operations, would immediately be used to strengthen the supply of emergency water to those being affected by the current dry weather conditions.
The cost of the truck is valued around $350,000.
