People of Bua and Macuata will soon have access to quality roads following Government’s signing of an agreement for a concessional loan from the Exim Bank of China for the sealing of the Dreketi – Nabouwalu highway.
Neglected by previous governments, the important road linking Labasa and Viti Levu via Nabouwalu had never been sealed.
Permanent secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, Pio Tikoduadua signed the agreement on behalf of Government this week for a loan of $220million from the Exim Bank.
“The signing of the agreement between Government and the China Railway First Group marks a significant milestone for Fiji,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
“And Government is very proud to be able to provide this as an impetus for growth in the province.”
Government is committed to putting in critical infrastructure in rural areas that will boost economic activities in the region.
“This is a very important work for us primarily as it is the main route connecting Labasa to Viti Levu through Nabouwalu which provides the shortest ferry route for the public,” Mr Tikoduadua said.
“We are thankful to the Government of the Peoples Republic of China as the Chinese Exim Bank has agreed to fund this project, which will benefit thousands of people of the three provinces of Vanua Levu.”
Work is expected to be completed within 30 months or two and a half years.
