NEW ELECTRIC PARKING METERS FOR LABASA COMMUTERS

01/09/2023

Labasa Town commuters and businesses will now be able to access four new electric parking meters following its commissioning today (01.09.23), which would make parking more organized.

The Minister for Housing and Local Government Hon. Maciu Katamotu while officiating at the event said the town has been expanding, with development happening at a rapid rate.

“Today, is a very proud moment for the people of Labasa to be part of the commissioning of four new digital parking meters lately purchased by Labasa Town Council at a cost of $54,448.13,” Hon. Katamotu said.

“I am delighted to note that the digital system introduced in Labasa Town means that we are focused to modernise our cities and towns.

“The new meters will make businesses efficient and better equip the enforcement agencies in controlling parking within the CBD area.”

He said that municipalities were working towards self-sufficiency through capital projects as such, so they would not have to rely heavily on Government funding.

“The Council is expected to rake in more income from such investment and improve on its services, needless to say, to upgrade the existing car parks and work on major capital development,” Hon Katamotu said.

“More Capital Projects will mean more funds for the Council that will promote self-sufficiency and sustainability.

“I cannot emphasise enough on the need for the Municipal Councils to strengthen their revenue streams in order to improve their financial positions.”

He added that this project would be happening in phases, and more meters is expected in the future.

Minister Katamotu toured the town to assess the damages done by a major fire to seven businesses, on Tuesday.
