NEW PARTNERSHIP TO CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR TOURISTS

Consultations held between Fiji’s Ministry of Tourism and the Fiji Police Force today highlighted the need to be aware of the impact of crimes committed against visitors to Fiji.

Ministry of Tourism permanent secretary Elizabeth Powell joined stakeholders from the tourism sector as well as the Fiji Police Force in looking at ways of improving security for tourists and visitors.

A Memorandum of Understanding was later signed today between the Ministry of Tourism and the Fiji Police Force cementing the need to promote tourism safety and security.

“If we give a negative experience to tourists, it will have a negative impact on our country. We need to take the message out to the regions and the children in schools on the safety and security of the tourism sector,” Ms Powell said.

Ms Powell highlighted to participants that a more inclusive approach not only from the Police Force was needed to address the issue.

Tourism Fiji Manager, Mr Thomas Valentine supported the statements put forward by the Tourism Ministry saying that the industry needs support from other Government agencies to create a safe destination. He also highlighted the role of the media in facilitating this process.

“The power of social media and the international press has the potential to destroy our fragile tourism industry. During natural disasters, tourists depend on authorities to take them to safety. We need to work as a team and provide the right environment to tourists. Tourism Fiji will be launching its new brand “Team Fiji” soon and we need all the support,” Mr Valentine said.

Outrigger on the Lagoon’s (Fiji) general manager Mr Peter Hopgood said they have partnered with the Sigatoka Police and retailers to make tourists comfortable visiting the town.

“We have identified a range of markets for them, created a clean and safe environment and have the support from the police so visitors visiting the town feel secured and safe,” Mr Hopgood said.
