While government is taking concrete steps to make education accessible to all Fijians, communities such as Saunaka village in Nadi have their done their bit in establishing a primary school to complement government’s work.
The Minister for Education, Filipe Bole will officially open Ratu Nalukuya Primary School in Saunaka, Nadi tomorrow morning, which caters for students from kindergarten to class 3.
Classes at the school began this year and next year, there are plans to start class 4 education.
Currently, the students travel to Nadi District, Nadi Primary, Mount St. Mary’s, Namaka Public and Nadi Airport School.
Having a school in the village means that students would have easier access to education in the vicinity of their village.
The Ministry of Education provided two teachers to the school this year, which will be increased with the intake of class 4 students in 2014.
More than $90,000 was spent on the construction of the new school, which was a result of the community’s self-help project.
Meanwhile, the opening of Ratu Nalukuya Primary School follows the commemoration of Saunaka’s 100 years of establishment.
