NEW RAY OF HOPE FOR THE RESIDENTS OF VUNAYAWA SETTLEMENT

31/05/2019

Children from Vunayawa in Sabeto, Nadi will no longer have to study in dim lights as Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Disaster Management & Meteorological Services, Hon. Jone Usamate today commissioned a rural electrification project for the settlement.

"In our rural communities, we are putting in place a solid foundation of essential services so that ordinary men and women can go about their lives without worrying about finding water, keeping the lights on at night or staying connected with the rest of our nation. This project is part of that vision," Minister Usamate said.

The $93,000 project will greatly benefit the 18 households in the settlement.

"The completion of this extension is the result of planning, long-term thinking and a steady flow of investment from your Government," Minister Usamate told close to 100 residents who were clearly trying to hold their excitements.

"Over the past five years, we’ve given funding of $224 million towards the energy sector. Seventy cents of every dollar spent in the sector have gone directly to funding rural electrification. So far, over 25,000 Fijian households have felt the benefits of rural electrification."

The 2018/2019 National Budget set aside $60 million to add another 6,623 households to that number, including Vunayawa.
