The Minister for Education, Hon. Aseri Radrodro, officially launched the initiative “From Waste to Climate Action: Scaling Sustainable Composting in Fijian Schools” at Nadi Sangam Primary School this week.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister highlighted the importance of schools not just as centres of academic learning but also as leaders in environmental stewardship. He stated that the initiative aims to pilot and expand composting programs across up to ten schools, beginning with Nadi Sangam Primary School.
Minister Radrodro emphasised that composting is not only an environmental solution but also a practical learning tool, integrated into subjects such as science, agriculture, environmental studies, maths, geography, and arts. Students are encouraged to actively participate, bringing what they learn at school into their homes and communities.
He also acknowledged the dedication of teachers, school administrators, and students in championing recycling and sustainability initiatives, stressing the importance of working together with the Ministry to enhance the quality of education while fostering environmental responsibility.
The initiative is aligned with Fiji’s National Development Plan 2025–2029, the National Education Policy Framework 2024–2033, and the country’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, strengthening climate-resilient education across the nation.
All partners involved were acknowledged including the Pacific Recycling Foundation, Recycle Organics, and the Canadian High Commission, for supporting climate action and sustainability education in Fiji’s schools.
