NEW ZEALAND COMMENDS FIJI’S PROGRESS

New Zealand’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Murray McCully has noted progress in Fiji’s move towards elections.

Minister McCully is in the country with the Ministerial Contact Group and is meeting with government and private officials.

"There is progress being made towards elections. There's been some progress made in that respect with the public consultation process that has been announced."

McCully who is also the Pacific Islands Forum Ministerial Contact Group (MCG) chair made the comments following meetings this morning between the MCG and various government officials.

This morning the group met with the Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and was briefed on Fiji’s electoral reforms.

They also met with Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and were also briefed on Fiji’s overall reforms according to the Roadmap and the Peoples Charter.

They also met with the Police Commissioner, the Prisons Commissioner, the chief of staff of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Minister for Labour, Permanent Secretaries of the various government ministries and other government stakeholders.
