The National Fire Authority (NFA) is advising people to take extra care during these rainy weather conditions.
Acting chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai said NFA was working with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to assist in any fire or emergency rescue operation required by members of the public during these rainy and windy weather conditions.
“NFA wishes to advise the general public to take the necessary fire safety precautions at their home. During these rainy weather conditions, fire incidents can occur as a result of electrical short-circuits, unattended cooking, candles, prayer diyas and mosquito coils left unattended,” Mr Moceitai said.
“People are asked to ensure that precautionary measures are taken, especially with the use of electrical appliances because improper use of electrical appliances can result in short-circuits.”
“With the heavy band of cloud remaining over the group, people will be confined to indoor activities and it is important that we watch over our children and ensure they are not playing with matches or lighters or any ignition source that can cause a fire.”
People living in low lying areas are asked to stay tuned to the radio and take heed of advice by NDMO.
“Move quickly to high ground to avoid being caught in flash floods. NFA fire crews are always on ready alert to attend to fire calls, road accident calls and even flood evacuation assistance required by residents”, Mr Moceitai said.
