The National Fire Authority (NFA) has received a significant boost in its firefighting capabilities through a generous donation of three new fire trucks and urban search and rescue and swift water rescue equipment from the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services.
Receiving this at the National Fire Authority Head Quarters in Walu Bay this afternoon, Minister for Housing and Local Government Hon. Maciu Nalumisa said this equipment will strengthen the NFA in their ability to respond swiftly and effectively, particularly in densely populated urban areas and vulnerable semi-urban communities.
“The three (3) trucks will be strategically stationed along the Suva-Nausori corridor due to the increasing number of fire emergencies in that area.”
The Minister noted that in 2021, out of all the fires in the central division, 63% of these occurred along the Suva-Nausori Corridor, 58% occurred in 2022, 58% in 2023, and 72% in 2024, and this year it has risen to 83%.
“These fire statistics show that there is much need to place more resources along this corridor. Statistically, the Suva-Nausori corridor is the most densely populated area compared to any other part of Fiji.”
“We know that the donation of these fire trucks will assist our firefighters in combating structural fires within the Suva–Nausori corridor and bring relief to the community.”
The Minister sincerely extended his appreciation on behalf of the government of Fiji to the Queensland Fire Department for this generous and strategic contribution to NFA’s firefighting and rescue capabilities.
He noted this donation speaks volumes not only in terms of material support but also in the spirit of cooperation and friendship.
The minister added this partnership is rooted in the Fiji–Australia Vuvale Partnership and formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year, reflecting a broader regional effort to foster disaster resilience.
In addition to the fire trucks, the donation includes water rafts, compressors, and specialised rescue equipment.
