Nairai villagers wants community post

26/08/2011

Villagers of Nairai Island are requesting Government to build a Community Police Post on the island.

Provincial Administrator (PA) Lomaiviti, Mr Pateresio Gunu told Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama it was an issue raised by villagers.

“They want a Community Post built on the island because of the increasing rate  of criminal activities on the island,” Mr Gunu said.

There is a Community Post in Qarani on Gau and a Police Station in Levuka which looks after the Lomaiviti Group.

Gunu said for villagers in Nairai it was a costly exercise because they had to travel by fiberglass punt to either Gau or Ovalau to lodge a complaint with police.

With the recent requirements by the Fiji Islands Maritime Safety Administration (FIMSA) on boats travelling into open seas, he adds most boats on the island did not meet requirements.

The Police Force recently reported an increase of sexual related offences in Lomaiviti .

Commissioner Eastern, Lieutenant Colonel  Neumi Leweni revealed that a task force was looking into this problem.
