Naivalurua keen on achieving excellence

06/04/2011

Police Commissioner Brigadier Ioane Naivalurua this morning reminded more than 700 police officers the need for achieving excellence in their service delivery.

While speaking at the 1st Quarter Police Commissioner’s parade this morning in Suva, Naivalurua said: “We need to be reminded of our theme for 2011 – achieving excellence in everything.”

He reminded them of the Commissioner’s intent, which was determined in September last year by the Fiji Police Force.

“Our emphasis as highlighted last year for 2011 was improving the image and reputation of the Fiji Police Force,” he told officers. “To transform the institution into a good, honest and trusted one.”

He reminded them that partnering with the community was an essential part of the forces’ intentions.

“It was our collective agreement that we will turn the institution into an honourable and respected one,” Naivalurua added.

He also said that the Police Force has made in-roads concerning the above since September 2010.

The Commissioner then emphasized the need to achieve excellence and said: “Our effort to achieving this will be directed towards the police academy.”

“We will emphasize on training, improving facilities and having the right people to plant the right seeds to newly trained officers.

“We need to also rid the lack of knowledge and ignorance within the institution so we can plant the right attitude and seed in the hearts and minds of our officers,” he said.

The Commissioner of Police said a major area of concern was the lack of discipline and the presence of ill discipline officers within the institution.

“We still have officers who have blatantly disregard rules and regulations, broken rules and have taken advantage of their positions,” he said.

“Some have even abused their powers and authority and our Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) have ruled against us.

“It has shown an increase of 30 per cent from the targeted 17.5 per cent and it is a concern.

“We should not put the blame on money, technology or other resources but ourselves.

“We have officers who should not be here, lack the knowledge and ill discipline ones that need to be corrected and straightened.

“We also have rotten officers and if they cant change their attitude towards improving the image of the Police Force, we can always ask them to go,” Naivalurua stressed.

He said to address the issue, workshops, courses will be organized and if need be, counsellors will be brought in.

Otherwise the Police Commissioner was happy with the overall achievement of the force in the past three months.

“I am happy to report to you as your Commissioner that I am satisfied with our achievement in the 1st Quarter,” he told his officers during the parade.

“We are on track, been able to use our money wisely, direct resources to the right places and have worked hard in the last quarter.”
