The District Officer Keyasi, Mr Enele Malele said the Department of Youth’s empowerment programme in the district of Nasikawa had resulted in youths abandoning marijuana cultivation.
“I visited them again last week and I am so happy to hear from them that they have all abandon drug cultivation and are beginning to look for alternative short term crops,” Mr Malele said.
“The fact that most St Giles Hospital patients are former marijuana smokers is really touching their lives. Recognising the problem has led them to understand the necessity of stopping the drug cultivation,” Mr Malele said.
“Even the Tui Nasikawa is a happy man.
“He expresses joy at witnessing the attitudes of youths in the area change for the better. They are making good use their time and becoming good role models in the village.”
Mr Malele said more districts in Navosa were eager to have similar youth workshop, however, it was up to the Youth Office in Lautoka and if they have funds available.
