National Conference on Education

The Fiji National University (FNU) is gearing up for the three-day national conference on Education in Fiji.

The theme for the conference is ‘Education for a new Fiji- Achievements, Issues and Challenges’ and it will be held at the FNU Lautoka Campus next week.

According to FNU media liaison officer, Ms Ashwini Prasad, the national conference will examine historical, philosophical and theoretical contributions in the development of the education system in Fiji.

“The conference shall have a number of plenary sessions, platform (oral) presentations, poster presentations and exhibitions,” Ms Prasad said.

“Sessions are planned on social science and science education, technical and vocational education and training, mathematics, commerce, information technology, medical, agriculture, art, sports and early childhood and community education, teaching practicum, education quality and regional issues.”

She said there would also be three special sessions on technical and vocational education and training challenges in Fiji, future directions in education for Fiji and public financing of education in Fiji 1980-2010.

“The panel members will include representatives from TVET, religious organisations who have managed religion based schools, representatives from the teachers’ organisations and stakeholders from the industry,” Ms Prasad added.

There will also be six keynote speakers at the conference, including the Ministry of Education permanent secretary, Dr Brij Lal.

The national conference will be held from November 22nd to 24th.
