Two schools in Nausori will have their classrooms upgraded through the assistance of the Japanese Government.
Japan’s embassy in Suva formalised this agreement for furniture to be also provided to Vunimono Islamia Primary School and Nabala Junior Secondary School.
The assistance through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) Programme is worth approximately US$96,545, (FJD$166,000) for Nabala Junior Secondary School, and US$85,204 (F$146,500) for Vunimono Islamia Primary School in Nausori.
In signing the grant with the heads of both schools, Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency Mr Yataka Yoshizawa said that Japan has so far approved 7 out of a total of 11 projects identified for funding from April 2011 to March 2012.
“Japan has provided 13 projects, under its GGP scheme with a total value of approximately 1 million US dollars, around Fiji Islands,” Mr Yoshizawa said.
The ambassador highlighted how the assistance given by the Japanese government would complement the Fijian government’s education reforms including the new school zoning scheme.
“I am confident that upon completion, these projects will ensure best of resources and equal opportunities available to children to accomplish their goals”, Ambassador Yoshizawa told guests at today’s signing ceremony.
Nabala Junior Secondary School principal Ms. Jacqueline Low said in 2011 the school was upgraded to form 5 and to cater for the students, the school needed to use existing classrooms.
“The additional classrooms will allow inclusion of Form 6 students and other forms will now have proper classrooms,” Ms Low said.
The school plans to include Form 7 in 2013 to prepare students for tertiary education.
Building of classrooms will begin in February for the School.
