New generator to address power failure

14/07/2011

Government has taken a proactive approach to work  disruptions and downtime by  implementing various measures to mitigate these disruptions.

This follows the commissioning of a new generator at Government Buildings this morning which now promises an uninterrupted, power-outage-hassle free work day for civil servants.

The new 240 KVA silent generator power backup system is a project initiated by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama who was concerned about past intermittent power outages that affected work productivity.

Commissioned by the Acting permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Nemani Mati, the $144,000 system will resolve power problems especially during extreme weather conditions

“Productivity is seriously affected because we have to send people home when power supply from Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) is disrupted because no work can be done.  ” he said.

The generator system is automated to switch on within three to seven seconds of a power disruption from the FEA.

The project was jointly funded by the Prime Minister’s office, the ministry of finance and a Chinese grant. The Public Works Department provided for labor costs.

In officially handing over the project to the Prime Minister’s office, divisional engineer central eastern Iliesa Vonu thanked the Prime Minister's  office for its continued confidence in engaging the department to construct such projects.

“In an evolving world where outsourcing has become the buzz word even for Government we thank government for this vote of confidence in allowing us to carry out this project,” he said.

The New Wing houses various government ministries and their headquarters.
