No more water cuts for Saweni residents

24/02/2011

Years of frustration with water cuts are over for residents of the hilly area of Saweni in Lautoka after the main supply line was upgraded last year.

Residents of the area are now enjoying consistent water supply with increased pressure after the Water Authority of Fiji projects management replaced the old 100mm mpvc with a new 200mm.

The pipes that existed before the upgrade were undersized and not able to meet the demands from the increasing population. As a result they were prone to frequent bursts and leakages which resulted in the low pressure and intermittent supply to the homes in the area. The elevation made it even harder for the water pressure to reach the homes.

The constant repairs also incurred high costs so WAF decided to totally upgrade the pipeline to improve supply and cut down on resource wastage.

One of the challenges faced by the project workers was the rocky terrain which they overcame by using excavators, before connecting pipes.

This has benefitted the residents of this elevated area and the Dreketi Indian School.

The project started in October with the engagement of 11 workers which included fitters, carpenters, labourers and one leading hand overseeing the daily construction works.

The total cost of the project was $153,000 and was completed in two months.
