Northern growth to create employment and education opportunities

08/12/2011

Economic growth in the Northern Division should be an encouragement for those seeking employment opportunities.

Labasa and Savusavu Town Council special administrator, Vijay Chand said the injection of funds into various projects in the north had seen development grow and created economic and employment opportunities.

“If you look at this year’s Budget, everything is focused in the North more or less,” Mr Chand said.

Government has pumped in a lot of money in the northern economy as part of its “Look North Policy” including concessions in the 2012 National Budget such as zero fiscal duty on raw materials.

“I think what Government is trying to do is promote in reality the local policy and once people try to invest in Labasa or Savusavu for that matter, I think we will have more population growth and more economic activity,” Mr Chand said.

“The town council continues to create a more conducive environment for investors including upgrading roads and beautifying the towns.”

He encouraged educational institutions to open branches on Vanua Levu so that children do not have to leave for Suva or other urban centres for studies.

The Fiji National University will soon open a branch in Labasa.

“FNU will be providing a hostel type opportunity for children in Labasa and children from other parts of Vanua Levu can take advantage of it as well,” Mr Chand said.

“Institutes are encouraged to open branches in Labasa so that students don’t have to go to Suva for education.”
