Ongoing professional education

30/08/2010

The Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma says there is still a need for dieticians and nutritionist to think seriously about implementing ongoing education within their profession.

Speaking at the national workshop for dieticians and nutritionists, Dr Sharma challenged the profession for more training and upskilling work to be carried out in the sector.

“Programs for Distant and Flexible learning, Basic and Advanced General Management and professional courses locally and abroad must be re-explored. We need to upskill ourselves and expand services to all subdivisional hospitals as part of the primary healthcare plans for 2010 to 2014,” Dr Sharma said.

On another note Dr Sharma strongly condemned the conduct and ethics within the medical profession in particular the Lautoka Hospital saga.

“The infighting, character assassinations and involvement of some employees other than medical personnel is totally deplored,” he said.

“A recent report of canned food being stolen by kitchen hands has surfaced to my office too. Matters of this nature become serious issues which Human Resource will address with swift action in future.”

Dr Sharma said all hospital staff not entitled to food should be made aware of their status.

“Lautoka again has been highlighted for this reason and I trust the matter is now buried,” he said.
