PM attends UNGA 64th session and IMF meetings

Prime Minister Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama will attend the 64th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and contribute to the annual General Debate from 23-26 & 28-30 September, 2009

Commodore Bainimarama as Head of Government is expected to take the stand at the green marble podium in the General Assembly Hall to update the assembly on the situation in Fiji.

He is expected to express Fiji’s views on the full range of global challenges and international events.

“I look forward to addressing the United Nations General Assembly on the current progress the country is making and also the timelines that we have set through the Strategic Framework for Change and Roadmap to Democracy ,” he said.

The main issues of the 64th session include Millennium Development Goals, World financial and economic crisis and its impact on development, Climate change, Disarmament, United Nations reform, Review of the Peace-building Commission and the Human Rights Council.

As Minister for Finance, the Prime Minister is also expected to attend the 2009 Annual Meetings, Istanbul Boards of Governors/ World Bank Group/ International Monetary Fund in October 6-7, 2009 –in Turkey .

Thousands of world economic leaders and businessmen will be in Istanbul to attend the IMF/World Bank Summit. Especially during these tough times facing the global economy, the meeting will be of a historic importance.
