The Fijian diaspora in England met with His Excellency, the President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on the evening of Monday (25/7/22) at the Copthorne Tara Hotel in the City of London.
As President Katonivere noted, it was encouraging to see a large number of Fijians at the event, especially those who have now made the UK their home.
“This occasion is a great opportunity to reflect on the respective areas that Fiji has benefitted from, and opportunities to be advanced as a result of collaboration with the UK; as well as organisations based here,” said His Excellency.
“Through the support provided by the UK, and under the Commonwealth umbrella; a significant number of Fijians have been given the opportunity to join Her Majesty’s British Forces.”
As a traditional sector of mutual interest for both nations, Defense remains a critical sector for enhancing development and growth.
“Our diaspora here are blessed that we have Fiji and the Government represented here in London through her High Commission. Its presence strategically reflects the significance of the relationship between the UK and Fiji; especially in advancing our interests,” said President Katonivere.
“The Fiji-UK partnership proved very strategic and favorable to us when we were hit by the global COVID-19 pandemic. Assistance provided significantly complemented our COVID recovery efforts.”
Nonetheless, His Excellency adds that like the UK and the rest of the world, Fiji is striving to return to normalcy and restore confidence in all areas of development.
“From the Government's perspective, we wish to acknowledge and thank you all for your continuous commitment and support to your families and friends back home.”
“Allow me to personally convey the nation's gratitude for playing an integral part in assisting your home country to bounce back post-pandemic, and to experience promising days ahead,” adds His Excellency.
