The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change recently partnered with the Naitasiri Tertiary Students Association to deliver an engaging awareness session at Namaka Campus, Nadi, as part of its ongoing outreach to empower young leaders in environmental and climate action.
The workshop highlighted key legislation including the Environment Management Act 2005, Litter Act 2008, Endangered and Protected Species Act 2002, Ozone Depleting Substances Act 1998 and the Climate Change Act 2021, underlining Fiji’s national commitment to sustainable development and climate resilience.
Students learned about Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), waste management, pollution control, and the crucial role of regulatory permits in promoting environmentally responsible practices. Presentations also showcased the important work of the Ozone Depletion Substance Unit and the Resource Management Unit in protecting Fiji’s natural resources and ecosystems.
A special focus was placed on climate change adaptation and mitigation, where students discussed practical ways communities can prepare for extreme weather events such sea level rise, stronger cyclones, and flooding. The session emphasized the importance of building resilient communities that can withstand and recover from climate-related challenges.
Students were also informed about opportunities to access Climate Adaptation Funds through the Ministry and its partners. These funds support projects such as resilient housing, sustainable agriculture, water security, and renewable energy, helping communities reduce vulnerability and safeguard livelihoods.
