$1.6million (fjd) in loan arrears have been recovered by the Public Service Commission’s scholarship division as part of the targeted $2.8million for the year.
Public Service Commission permanent secretary Mr Parmesh Chand said the arrears were recovered from students who were sponsored under the PSC cost sharing program, the student loan scheme and the scholarship program.
He said such a good result was achieved through the implementation of strategic policies and procedures, in partnership and with the assistance of the Department of Immigration and the Ministry of Finance.
Emphasising on the need to recover as much money as possible, Mr Chand said the sustainability of the scholarship program was dependent on the rate of recovery of arrears, which allowed Government to provide ongoing assistance to needy students.
He added the creation of a deposit account at the Bank of South Pacific had greatly facilitated the work of the Loan Recovery Unit of PSC as well as make it much easier for recipients to make repayments from locations Fiji wide.
