Parents living in rural areas need to change their mindsets and show more commitment in ensuring their children receive formal education.
Provincial development permanent secretary, Colonel Manasa Vaniqi made these remarks during the handing over of building material at Navuso District School in Naitasiri, this week.
He said Government was committed in assisting every school regardless of religion and background ethnicity.
This follows an announcement by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, who visited many schools around the country last year.
Speaking in Fijian, Col Vaniqi said Government had played its part to improve schools, it’s the parents who should be more committed towards their children’s education.
“The people’s charter for change, peace and progress clearly states government’s commitment to the education sector,” Col Vaniqi said.
“Education plays a vital role in ensuring that government’s vision is achieved.”
Government assistance worth $30,000 was in the form of building materials such cement blocks, timber, down pipe, cement, nails and other building materials.
The parents and the school committee are hopeful the Government will also assist in delivering 100 school desks for nearly 150 students.
Head teacher, Navuso District School, Mr Filimone Kelepi said he was thankful to Government for the timely assistance.
For the last seven years the school was not able to secure any form of assistance from Government.
