Parents urged to go easy on childhren

18/01/2011

Police is urging parents to show understanding when dealing with examination results of their children.

The Ministry of Education released Fiji Junior Certificate results this morning.

In the past reports surfaced that parents punished or ridiculed their children for producing unsatisfactory exam results.

Exam result related conflicts within the family have sometimes led to suicides, arguments, embarrassment for the child involved and overall the stigma of being an under performer.

Police Spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said parents must never make their child feel as if he or she was unworthy.

“Though we spend much money on education it is not worth harming the well being of your child over, there are always other options so we should always guide them and empower them towards what their strengths are,” Inspector Sokomuri said.

IP Sokomuri said those who failed from the school system usually made up a percentage of law breakers because they had no other support system to help them, especially from home.

“Children as young as 12 -14 years have committed suicide because of poor examination results or because they did not meet parent’s expectation,  societial views often adds to the problem so please be mindful of what you impart to your children, especially those who are awaiting exam results and those who did not do so well,” he said.

The Fiji School Leaving Certificate results will be released this week.
