Pharmaceutical medication under price control

21/05/2011

Twenty four of the 74 generic, price controlled medication items, which are in sufficient stock have been released to retail pharmacies for public consumption, on prescription by medical practitioners in the private and public sector

The balance of price controlled medication, will be released in phase 2 and 3, as supplies become readily available at the Fiji Pharmaceutical services shortly

The release of these quality generic items, will effectively mean that the prices will be determined by the Commerce Commission. Consumer organizations such as the Consumer Council will assist in the monitoring process

All retail pharmacies need to place a list of such items on their notice board and/or the display window for the general public to determine that prices paid are appropriate

Ministry of Health will shortly advertise the rates in the local media and on its webpage for public information, as part of its consumer rights advocacy work.

The first lot of generic medications include certain antibiotics, diabetic, heart and kidney medication
