Planned Water Shutdown

17/08/2010

The Water Authority of Fiji wishes to announce that it will shut down the Waila pumping station this Saturday August 21, 2010 to allow for upgrading works.

WAF Communications Officer Josevata Cava said they have in place a number of planned shut-downs to its operations at the Waila and Tamavua treatment plants to take place over the next few months.

This will mean zero production and sometimes decreased production at these facilities.

“The shut-downs are to allow for the electrical, technical and structural upgrade of the treatment plants to make them more efficient, thus increasing their production capacity,” said Cava.

“The first of the three shut downs will begin on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 5pm to Sunday midday.

“The second shutdown is scheduled for 28th August at 5pm to midday Sunday August 29th.  The final shutdown is scheduled for a later date in October.

Cava says that the shutdown on Saturday is to replace the plant’s main Power Distribution Centre [PDC] or switchboard.

“This is a complex operation requiring the total shut down of the power supply to the high lift pumps, which pump treated water from Waila to the Raralevu and Wainibuku reservoirs.

“This upgrade to our system is necessary to ensure for increased production at the treatment plant to cater for the growing demand,’ he said

Fletcher Construction and the Fiji Electricity Authority of Fiji will assist the Water Authority of Fiji team.

All consumers are advised to store water to last for the duration of the operation.
